Description

This unit develops contextual knowledge of graphic design styles and movements through the twentieth century and students will apply these concepts to generate original works. Students will use some software programmes in the Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator and Photoshop.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate confidence and knowledge in use of relevant computer graphic applications.
  2. Generate original designs, according to the unit design brief, that demonstrate theoretical research has underpinned the practical and conceptual approaches.
  3. Structure and develop design briefs, that demonstrate an understanding of the principles and processes of layout and typography.
  4. Understand the history and context of selected design styles, including typography and colour contexts.

Unit Content

  1. Close study of designs, styles, typography and colour through the key movements of the twentieth century, particularly forms such as posters, magazines, record sleeves and signage.
  2. Creation of original designs that demonstrate an awareness of visual and cultural theory in new media.
  3. Development of concepts into design briefs that consider principles of layout and typography and processes for colour print production.
  4. Practical exercises in design development in graphic applications.
