Description

The Doctor of Philosophy consists entirely of research that makes a contribution to and development of new knowledge in the field. The purpose of the thesis is to train advanced students in the use of research methodology and techniques, the development of conceptual and theoretical perspectives while undertaking critical inquiry appropriate to their field of study. By the end of their candidature the student should be capable of conceiving, designing, implementing, evaluating and publishing a research based study.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Acquire an understanding of the research topic through extensive intellectual inquiry and a review of the literature.
  2. Identify a conceptually, professionally or theoretically significant topic.
  3. Implement the research proposal, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the relevant research techniques.
  4. Justify the research proposal to reviewers at a graduate seminar.
  5. Prepare a thesis that presents the findings, draws conclusions and assesses the implications of the study.
  6. Present a research proposal that conceptualises the research problem and demonstrates an understanding of the theoretical or conceptual background to the study. The research proposal also contains a plan for the conduct of the research.
  7. Present the thesis for examination by independent assessors.

Unit Content

  1. Analyse and synthesize findings.
  2. Complete changes/revisions and prepare thesis for reproduction and/or publication.
  3. Implement a research proposal.
  4. Plan, design and present a research proposal.
  5. Prepare a thesis with conclusions and recommendations and present for examination.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Student and supervisor/s meet on a regular basis to develop all stages of the thesis.
