Description

This unit introduces students to Catholic beliefs and practices expressed in 'creeds of faith' and the religious celebrations known as 'sacraments'. Knowledge and understanding of 'creed' and 'sacraments' will be linked to the teaching of the Religious Education Program (Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary) in Catholic schools. Completion of three Catholic Education units forms part of the accreditation requirements to teach in Catholic schools. Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the core beliefs of Christianity as expressed in Catholic creeds.
  2. Relate the contemporary role of the Catholic Church to its mission of evangelisation.
  3. Interpret the significance of symbol, ritual and story in both human and religious expressions of celebration.
  4. Integrate knowledge and understanding of creed and sacraments with individual life experience.

Unit Content

  1. The human quest for God.
  2. The Judeo Christian story.
  3. Jesus of Nazareth: Jesus the Christ.
  4. Trinity (God - Father, Son, Spirit).
  5. Church.
  6. Sacramentality: symbols, signs, rituals, mystery.
  7. Church and liturgy.
  8. Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation.
  9. The Religious Education Program used in Catholic schools (Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary).

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials, student centred discussion groups, online learning activities and learning tasks.
