Description

This unit explains the process for the formation of the Bible and why it is best read as a religious document. Knowledge and understanding of the Bible will be linked to implications for teachers in Catholic schools in Western Australia. The unit is designed for students considering teaching in Catholic schools in Western Australia. Completion of three Catholic Education units forms part of the accreditation requirements to teach in Catholic schools. Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify the literary genres in the Bible.
  2. Deepen understanding of the historical, geographical and cultural contexts which shaped the Bible.
  3. Explain the role of key figures in the Bible.
  4. Explain the significance of the person Jesus Christ.

Unit Content

  1. The Bible as story: 'story' in human and religious experience.
  2. Passing on the story: growth and development of the Old and New Testaments.
  3. The setting: geographical, historical and cultural background of the key narratives of the Bible.
  4. The central character: Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials, student centred discussion groups, online learning activities and learning tasks.
