Description

This unit studies a range of contemporary issues which influence the theory and practice of religious education in Catholic schools in the Australian context. The unit explores issues pertaining to the nature and purpose of religious education, as well as socio-cultural and religious issues which constitute the broader context in which religious education is conducted.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This unit will be conducted as a compacted unit, either: One week during school holidays; four Saturdays during the semester or summer school in late January. Students wishing to enrol in CED6102 should consult university timetable for availability and the mode of delivery.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critique broader curriculum, societal and religious issues that influence religious education.
  2. Critique common classroom theory and practice in the field of religious education in light of current evidence-based research.
  3. Explain the following terms:revelation, evangelisation, catechesis, religious education.
  4. Outlinethe work of Catholic schools in: the broader context of the Churchs mission in evangelisation, context of socio-cultural and ecclesial change.
  5. Summarise contemporary and historical perspectives on Catholic religious education.

  1. Emerging issues in religious education curriculum and pedagogy.
  2. Historical and contemporary Catholic perspectives on church and mission.
  3. Historical and contemporary models of religious education.
  4. Spirituality and religious education.
  5. Teaching and coordination of religious education in a Catholic school.
