Description

This unit examines an understanding of sacramentality and the seven sacraments within the Catholic tradition. The unit also explores the meaning of sign, symbol, ritual and gift associated with each of the sacraments. Also examined is the teaching of sacramentality and the sacraments in the Religious Education Learning Area in a Catholic school. Students will be supported in building the required skills for critical analysis, evaluation, application and the integration of unit content.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply an advanced understanding of the meaning of sacramentality.
  2. Apply knowledge of the scriptural, historical and contemporary understanding of the sacraments to the context of Catholic schools today.
  3. Analyse how the gifts of the sacraments can be applied to everyday life.
  4. Critique current classroom theory and practice in the field of Religious Education in light of current evidence-based research.

  2. Development of religious sign, ritual and symbol.
  3. Sacraments of Healing (Penance, Anointing of the Sick).
  4. Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist).
  5. Sacraments of Service (Marriage, Holy Orders).
  6. Sacraments in a Catholic school.
