Description

This unit examines the role of the leader in a Catholic school setting. Contemporary culture, schooling in the 21st century and current research on religious leadership are analysed in light of Scripture and Church documents to explore implications for leadership today in Catholic schools. Theoretical knowledge will be linked to practical experience and a case study in order to explore challenges and opportunities for leaders in today's Catholic schools. Students will be supported in building the required skills for critical analysis, evaluation, application and the integration of unit content.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Appraise scriptural, ecclesial and educational models of leadership and their implications for leadership of today's Catholic school.
  2. Analyse the ways in which contemporary culture and schooling in the 21st century impact upon Catholic identity, curriculum and leadership.
  3. Critically select the major ideas about leadership in today's Catholic schools and apply these ideas in their own school setting.
  4. Appraise current writing on the spiritual and theological qualities of leadership and its personal impact upon their own role as Catholic school leader.

  1. Historical perspectives on the role of the leader in Catholic schools.
  2. Scriptural and ecclesial writings which inform leadership in Catholic schools today.
  3. The meeting of contemporary culture and Catholic identity in Catholic schools - implications for leadership.
  4. Spiritual and theological qualities of Catholic school leadership.
  5. Leadership and curriculum in the 21st Century in a Catholic school.
