The unit offers students the opportunity to explore their professional development needs and prepare for future work through a process of individual needs assessment, flexible self-directed learning, reflective practice and the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts in their role working with children and families. The concepts of case management and trauma informed practice and how these are applied in practice will be taught within an applied framework. The unit has a field based practicum component where students will undertake supervised practice and be required to demonstrate they can validate the Australian Community Workers Association Practice Guidelines. Due to the experiential nature of this unit, where active participation is required, new enrolments will not be accepted after the first week of the enrolment period.
Supervised practicum may take place across weekends and in semester breaks, depending on the agency in which the practicum occurs.
Students must pass 120 credit points in their major. Students cannot enrol in this unit after Week 1 of the semester without Course Coordinator approval.

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies
Simulation exercises, workshops, guest speakers from the field. Practicum of 400 hours across two placement types in the field. To be eligible to undertake the professional placement of 400 hours, the students are required to complete the associated unit material and weekly activities (on campus or online) and upload into SONIA a National Police Clearance. The Unit Coordinator may discuss the contents of the National Police Clearance with the student if there is any potential risk to student, agency and ECU. Agencies may request a Working with Children Check (or equivalent) before commencing placement. On Placement, students are required to comply with Australian Community Workers and ECU Codes of Conduct, along with any agency requirements.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
