Description

This unit advances the student's knowledge of mental health theory and practice. Aspects of mental health care including psychopathology, treatment modalities, models of care, medico-legal issues in care and changing trends in the provision of care in the mental health setting will be explored. Students will be expected to be self directed in examining issues relating to clinical practice in the mental health service context.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Assess resources available for the promotion of mental health with clients and families in the hospital and in the community.
  2. Critically appraise mental health theory and research as it relates to mental health practice across various practice settings and patient groups.
  3. Detail the aetiology of the different forms of mental illness and discuss the effects that mental illness has on individuals, families and Australian society.
  4. Evaluate the development and application of legislation and medico-legal issues relating to mental health and society.
  5. Evaluate therapeutic interventions and treatment modalities relevant to individuals and groups in specific practice settings.

Unit Content

  1. Changing trends in the provision of mental health care and the promotion of mental health in various settings will be discussed and evaluated.
  2. Current clinical and diagnostic descriptions of mental health and psychiatric disorders.
  3. How coding systems relating to diagnostic categories are used in current mental health service provision, including the DSM-V and the ICD-10.
  4. Medico-legal issues in care will be addressed as they are relevant to contemporary Australian mental health service provision.
  5. Models of care as utilised with the context of mental health service provision.
  6. Psychopathology, psychopharmacology and interpersonal treatment modalities as they relate to the role of the mental health clinician.
  7. The effects of mental illness on individuals and Australian society.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will engage and learn through a range of interactive and contemporary methods and learning modes. These include online learning, virtual and simulated environments, discussion board, interactive web cases/quizzes, and e-reading packages.
