Description

This unit advances the student's knowledge of mental health theory and practice. Aspects of mental health care including psychopathology, treatment modalities, models of care, medico-legal issues in care and changing trends in the provision of care in the mental health setting will be explored. Students will be expected to be self-directed in examining issues relating to clinical practice in the mental health service context.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse resources available for mental health promotion with consumers and families within in-patient facilities and the community.
  2. Evaluate therapeutic interventions and treatment modalities relevant to individuals and groups in specific practice settings.
  3. Critically appraise contemporary mental health theory and research as it relates to mental health practice across various practice settings and cultural groups.
  4. Detail the aetiology of different forms of mental illness and discuss the effects that mental illness has on individuals, families and Australian society.
  5. Critically discuss the consequences of delayed treatment of acute presentations of mental illnesses.

  1. Changing trends in the provision of mental health care and the promotion of mental health in various settings.
  2. The effects of mental illness on individuals, their families and Australian society.
  3. Medico-ethical issues in contemporary Australian mental health service provision.
  4. Models of care, including early intervention strategies, as utilised within the context of mental health service provision.
  5. Psychopathology, current clinical and diagnostic descriptions of mental health and psychiatric disorders and interpersonal treatment modalities.
  6. Current clinical and diagnostic descriptions of mental health and psychiatric disorders.
  7. Implementation of early intervention strategies.
