Description

In this unit students will be provided with the opportunity to integrate theory into practice and to demonstrate mental health competencies within their scope of practice through a clinical practicum. This unit is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills that can be applied to meet the needs of consumers, carers, their families and communities. Students will be able to evaluate their ability to provide mental health care across the lifespan in various settings of mental health practice. Students will arrange a suitable series of placements in consultation with the unit/course coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply mental health theory, National Mental Health Practice Standards and contemporary research in the delivery of mental health care in the various practice settings.
  2. Deliver high quality mental health care with contemporary policy and legislative parameters.
  3. Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in the differentiation of disorders and the early recognition of dysfunctional behaviour.
  4. Demonstrate clinical competence and safe practice in the delivery of mental health care in various mental health care settings.
  5. Display awareness of the various treatment modalities and clinical information systems in mental health care and use a range of strategies and interventions relevant to the specific practice setting.
  6. Incorporate the multi disciplinary approach and systems perspective to address the multiple determinents of mental health problems.
  7. Utilise the clinical decision making framework in the delivery of mental health care.

Unit Content

  1. Students under the preceptorship of clinical placement staff will assess, plan, implement and evaluate mental health care for mental health clients, and their carers and families in a variety of settings adopting a range of models of care.
  2. Clinical practice will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate competency in mental health care with individuals and groups in a variety of therapeutic environments and across the spectrum of care.
  3. Students will be exposed to a broad variety of practice issues in the areas of child and adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry, drug and alcohol service, community mental health and mental health promotion and older age mental health services.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will be preceptored by host facility clinical staff in the development of mental health skills commensurate with the level of clinical preparation. Overall supervision and coordination will be provided by University clinical staff. 30 practicum days are required for this unit in three 10 day rotations (inpatient, community and drug/alcohol) in a supervised clinical setting.
