Description

This unit provides an introduction to key writing skills and techniques that are used in mainstream and new media. The unit also develops an awareness of different media, especially their formats, genres, conventions and publication processes. The unit is an ideal introduction for students who want to major in Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations or for students who want to improve their writing skills and knowledge of the media. Emphasis is placed on learning how to write clear and concise copy that is grammatically correct and publishable. In a world where the future job market is unknown and unpredictable, this unit provides the ground work for building useful and transferable skills.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Write with improved grammar, spelling and publication.
  2. Edit grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  3. Identify the characteristics, formats, genres, conventions and writing processes of different communication formats.
  4. Prepare and write copy in a range of media formats.

Unit Content

  1. Developing skills in writing with improved grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  2. Developing skills in editing for correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  3. Writing news stories and feature articles.
  4. Preparing media releases.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
