Description

This unit explains the function of advertising within the broader marketing and communication industries. A breakdown of the key roles within an advertising agency and the relationship of each role to one another, the advertiser and outside suppliers is considered. The development of an advertising campaign is analysed from initial briefing through to the creative development, the production process, the media process and finally post campaign analysis. Key regulatory and self-regulatory issues are also considered, including advertising codes of ethics, trade practices and consumer protection legislation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify and apply a critical understanding of the key elements and characteristics of some fundamental forms of creative writing, to develop creative works in a range of these forms.
  2. Identify and apply a critical understanding of the function of advertising agencies and the different roles within contemporary advertising campaigns.
  3. Evaluate advertisements and provide recommendations collectively as a group based on internal and external environmental factors.
  4. Discuss advertising practices with consideration to law, ethics, and moral principles.

Unit Content

  1. An overview of advertising in marketing communications.
  2. An introduction of advertising agency profiles, roles, and functions.
  3. An introduction of creative and strategic verbal and non-verbal messages across traditional and digital media.
  4. An overview of the regulatory aspects of advertising including codes of ethics, trade practices legislation, consumer protection legislation and self-regulatory guidelines/bodies.
  5. Report writing and presentation skills.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
