Description

This unit provides advanced students with the opportunity to undertake supervised work in a professional capacity. Students are responsible for finding the placement (except in journalism). Reporting back to the unit tutor, students undertake their attachment to a relevant workplace. The number of hours worked each week is negotiated between the student and workplace supervisor. A learning contract, entered into by student, workplace supervisor and tutor determines the specific content and teaching and learning processes, together with the skills and competencies to be acquired and demonstrated. A personal career-focused resume and portfolio will be developed by the student to reflect the professional experience.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the skills required by the workplace.
  2. Display initiative, reliability and competence in their duties.
  3. Make a substantial professional contribution to a given work environment.
  4. Plan and execute a strategy to find a professional placement.

Unit Content

  1. Students are required to find a professional placement relevant to the major in which they are undertaking the placement. They complete at least 160 hours with an employer in the semester of enrolment. (Journalism students are to liase with Journalism tutor about finding placements.) Students must satisfactorily complete work similar to that required of a graduate employee, and demonstrate their competence to contribute to the workplace. Skills of dealing with employer and clients are required, as is competence with equipment and software, where included in the learning contract. Employers? expectations of reliability and competence should be met, and students should demonstrate their capacity to take the initiative where appropriate. Students analyse the skills and competencies expected in the workplace in order to develop an individual learning contract between the student, the workplace supervisor and the unit tutor. Students record their learning experiences and undertake a critical self-assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in relation to the work environment. Upon completion of their commitment, students prepare a report on their placement along with a portfolio reflecting the work they have undertaken.
