The conduct of a research project in arts, communications or creative industries, in one of the following discipline areas: Arts disciplines: English; History; French; Politics & International Relations; Visual Arts; Fashion & Textiles and Writing. Communications disciplines: Advertising; Journalism; Media, Culture and Mass Communications; Public Relations. Creative Industries disciplines: Film & Video; Game Design & Culture; Photomedia; Interactive Media; Animation; Graphic Design; Environmental & Spatial Design. Study in the unit will culminate in preparation and submission of a Masters Thesis. Where submission embodies a substantial creative project or production in the practice of the chosen discipline, the length of the accompanying written component is proportionally reduced to a minimum of 20% of the overall thesis.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

In these units the student will implement, and prepare for submission of, the thesis. The study, and its progress, will be closely supervised by the appointed supervisors. The preparation of the thesis will be done with the support of the supervisors, and with instruction from the course co-ordinator. It is probable that at least one draft thesis will be prepared. The student and supervisors will mutually agree on progress review dates, on draft submission dates, and creative work dates. A component of these units will be a masters forum where students foster praxis by extending their research through analysis and debate of their work, and that of others, within the diverse arts field. The aim is to develop a critical understanding of discipline specificity and cross-disciplinarity across the arts.
