Description

This unit examines the theoretical and clinical application of clinical governance within the context of nursing and midwifery in the health care setting. It explores issues related to the role of nurses and midwives in provision of client care and the evaluation of strategies used to determine efficacy of practice. Strategies include: total quality management, Evaluation and Quality Improvement Program (EQuIP), clinical risk management and clinical audit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse a framework to evaluate clinical governance derived from healthcare; organisation.
  2. Appraise concepts related to clinical governance and applicability to nursing and midwifery practice.
  3. Critique the departmental clinical governance infrastructure within the health service.
  4. Justify how a quality improvement cycle can use clinical audits to measure clinical effectiveness and improve nursing practice and patient care outcomes.
  5. Review the definition of clinical governance and its application in the clinical setting.

Unit Content

  1. Clinical Performance and Evaluation: clinical standards and clinical indicators.
  2. Clinical Risk: the monitoring and management of incident and adverse events, and risk profile analysis.
  3. Clinical audit and benchmarking.
  4. The applicablitiy of clinical governance to Nursing as a method of ensuring that patients receive the highest quality nursing care possible.
  5. The four pillars of clinical governance.
  6. Total quality management and EQUIP.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The clinical learning environment and teaching processes will encourage students to develop knowledge and skills by means of a multi-faceted, interactive approach. A range of methods and resources will be used for example, case studies, discussions, clinical practice and scenario based learning to meet individual learning needs.
