Description

This unit provides a critical appraisal of the major psychoanalytic approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. It introduces students to very different variants of psychodynamic practice. Each tradition of practice addresses itself to very specific conceptual problems; taking practice in new directions. It is the clinical implications of these variations that is of particular interest.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the main approaches to psychodynamic counselling.
  2. Compare the different psychodynamic counselling approaches.
  3. Evaluatethe assumptions about how change occurs in selectedpsychodynamic counselling approaches.
  4. Summarise the range of therapeutic innovations deriving from the different psychodynamic counselling approaches.
  5. Analyse the main interventions used by the different psychodynamic counselling approaches.

  1. A framework for considering psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy.
  2. Ego Psychology: central theoretical constructs, practical application in the consulting room and limitations and practical implications.
  3. British Object Relations Theory: central theoretical constructs, practical application in the consulting room and limitations and practical implications.
  4. American Object Relation Theory: central theoretical constructs, practical application in the consulting room and limitations and practical implications.
  5. French Psychoanalysis: central theoretical constructs, practical application in the consulting room and limitations and practical implications.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Whilst the main thrust of the unit is an academic appraisal of the different theories of counselling, learning will also be experiential through exercises, videos and simulated interviews. Where possible, case material should form the basis of the learning experience. A combined lecturing, seminar and workshop approach is adopted.

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
