Description

This unit provides an opportunity for the student to receive supervised practice in an agency setting. Aimed at developing the full identity and competence of the counsellor, students will be required to plan, implement and evaluate counselling sessions, collaborate as part of an interprofessional team, engage reflectively in supervision and adhere to agency protocols, policies and procedures. Students will spend approximately two days a week in an agency setting and will carry a client load allocated by the agency. Students are expected to meet professional standards of punctuality, dependability and responsibility.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Placement in an approved counselling agency.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass COU6501, COU6502, COU6503, COU6504, COU6505, COU6506, COU6507, COU6508, COU6509 and COU6510.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically apply culturally appropriate, evidence-based theories and techniques and interpersonal skills to client presentations, formulations, interventions and evaluations.
  2. Investigate and employ policies, procedures and codes of practice relevant to the context of placement, agency mandate, and individual needs of the client.
  3. Communicate in a professional, ethical and culturally responsive manner in all modes of interaction (face-to-face, written, phone and digital).
  4. Engage in supervision, self-evaluation and reflective practice to monitor professional functioning and implement strategies for ongoing personal development.

Unit Content

  1. Undertaking professional activities in the context of managing a counselling case load.
  2. Developing a learning contract including; the goals and processes to be used to achieve placement objectives; placement tasks and expectations; skills to be practiced; individual learning goals; theory integration processes; and supervision arrangements.
  3. Developing a client contact portfolio including; log of hours and case summaries.
  4. Engaging in self-assessment, supervision and reflective practice.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Placement will consist of 220 hours, including a minimum of 60 client contact hours and 16 hours of supervision.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
