Description

This unit aims to develop the skills and capabilities required for quality research that has impact. Communication skills will be developed in presenting and publishing research for different audiences. This unit will help students develop an understanding of research translation, impact and engagement. This unit will also help prepare students for diverse career paths in research and develop the required professional skills for these. Students will have the opportunity to develop engagement and communication strategies that are aligned to their discipline in collaboration with their supervisors.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Lectures in this unit will alternate between Mt Lawley and Joondalup campuses.

Co-Requisite Rule

Unit is open to enrolment for students in courses J42 and J43 only.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Appraise and implement different strategies to communicate research and research outcomes across a variety of formats.
  2. Integrate and apply contemporary technologies to facilitate dissemination of research findings
  3. Assess and incorporate the needs and interests of specific target audiences when devising communication strategies
  4. Devise strategies to communicate complex disciplinary problems, ideas and research outcomes in interdisciplinary contexts.
  5. Prepare research reports suitable for publication.
  6. Evaluate the significance of the research to the discipline and articulate its impact in a broader context.
  7. Integrate and comply with principles of research responsibility, integrity and professionalism in relation to providing, receiving and responding to feedback.

Unit Content

  1. Understanding and engaging with different audiences to convey the significance and impact of research.
  2. Preparing and delivering successful research presentations for different audiences.
  3. Identifying different forms of publication relevant to research; understand the peer review process and authorship issues.

Learning Experience

ON-CAMPUS

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
