Description

In this unit the relationship between garment style, fabrics, embellishments and construction techniques will be studied. Students will produce quality garments using construction techniques that are frequently used in Home Economics classrooms. They will select appropriate methods in regard to fabric, garment style and function. Students are advised that this unit will attract a small incidental fee for coursework materials.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from CSC1175

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Assess the fit of garments and carry out alterations to improve fit.
  2. Construct garments from a variety of fabric constructions, including knits.
  3. Critically evaluate the standard of construction used to complete a range of clothing.
  4. Design and adapt basic commercial patterns to meet the needs of a specific purpose.
  5. Interpret pattern symbols and instructions to accurately construct garments using a commercial plan.
  6. Investigate and construct a variety of embellishments suitable for the classroom.
  7. Select appropriate clothing construction techniques for style, end use and fabric.

Unit Content

  1. Clothing Construction: Construction techniques related to fabric, aesthetics and function; use of standards for and assessment of construction techniques.
  2. Commercial Patterns: Various brands and types, pattern sizing, pattern markings and instructions, relationship between pattern choice and fabric selection.
  3. Embellishment techniques: use of dyes, machine and hand techniques, application of different textiles.
  4. Garment Fitting: Principles of fit, methods of garment fitting, wearing and style ease, analysing fit by grain, wrinkles and garment structure, principles and methods of garment alteration.
  5. Knits: Special requirements, suitable construction techniques and sewing equipment.
