Description
This unit develops students' expertise in:the software development life cycle; software project management techniques including planning, risk and configuration management; quality assurance; verification and validation software; and software requirements definition and design specification. The unit further studies management issues involved in computing together with technical issues related to measurement and assessment of processes. Future developments together with social issues relating to ethics, professionalism and the law are also considered.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Discuss the social, organisational and personal imperatives of professional practice.
- Evaluate and use a range of project management and software development tools.
- Explain the general management and organisational change management issues associated with complex projects.
- Explain the management life-cycle of substantial projects.
- Implement the processes involved in developing a software product.
- Prepare project plans to meet strategic and operational objectives.
- Profile the software and systems requirements for a project.
- Utilise project management principles and practice.

- Automated support tools for use in the software development life cycle.
- Configuration management, change control.
- Documentation report and technical writing.
- Ethical issues; standards, codes of conduct, confidentiality.
- Implementation issues for systems.
- Legal issues; contracts, negligence, copyright, outsourcing, competitive tendering, consultancy.
- People, teamwork, and conflict resolution.
- Professional issues; standards, professional associations, professional practice, continuing professional development, networking and mentoring.
- Project management principles and practices including software life cycles, methodologies, models and prototypes.
- Quality assurance and risk management documentation.
- Software design issues and specification.
- Software requirements definition, including generation of Scope of Work, develop Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), prepare a Cost Estimate and a Development Schedule.
- Testing, verification and validation.
