Description

This unit focuses upon the selection and definition of a research topic and the creation and acceptance of an Honours project or Masters thesis proposal.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Consider any relevant ethical issues and make a submission for Ethics Committee approval.
  2. Create a resource management plan and schedule for their research.
  3. Develop a preliminary review of relevant literature.
  4. Identify a suitable Honours project or Masters thesis topic.
  5. Identify a supervisor and gain approval from the Honours or Postgraduate Coordinator.
  6. Identify research methods applicable to the study.
  7. Implement a pilot study or demonstrate proof of concept.
  8. Plan, write and submit an acceptable research proposal for the project/thesis.

Unit Content

  1. Introductory logic and philosophical bases of research.
  2. Literature survey and background readings for the Honours project or Masters thesis.
  3. The nature and scope of an Honours level project or Masters thesis.
  4. The structure of an Honours project or Masters thesis proposal.
  5. Writing skills for proposal development.

Additional Learning Experience Information

After initial approval is gained from the Honours or Postgraduate coordinator, the unit will be based on individual consultations between the student and the nominated supervisor. In addition, students will attend lectures on writing and logic and will submit draft proposals so that their development may be reviewed by the unit coordinator/lecturer.
