Description

This unit is undertaken by students who have been successful in securing a work experience placement in the Computing and Security discipline. In this unit the student is supervised by a School of Science staff member who is allocated as their placement supervisor in addition to a workplace supervisor who is an experienced staff member of the organisation hosting the work experience student. Students undertaking a work placement will demonstrate knowledge relevant to the Computing and Security discipline as well as problem solving, communication and collaboration, and ethical conduct skills.

Prerequisite Rule

Students enrolled in I45 or L33 must pass CSI5113 or CSI6219.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded CSI5255, CSI6223

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Reflect critically on knowledge and skills used to solve discipline related problems.
  2. Recommend solutions to problems to a range of different audiences.
  3. Interpret and action feedback in an effective and professional manner.
  4. Work collaboratively in a timely, professional and ethical manner.
  5. Plan, implement and deliver quality work that meeting industry needs and expectations.

Unit Content

  1. Evaluating workplace performance.
  2. Collecting of workplace activity examples for discussion and analysis.
  3. Project management and evaluation.
  4. Communication and collaboration.
  5. Professionalism and practice.
  6. Project implementation strategies and techniques appropriate to workplace expectations.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This is a work experience unit in which the placement is equivalent to a minimum of 340 hours (over 10+ weeks) of industry placement. ECU placement supervisors ensure that an agreed plan of work is executed and industry supervision is carried out by a workplace supervisor. This is a Work Integrated Learning unit designed to create an authentic learning experience in an industry setting where students can demonstrate knowledge associated with a course within the Computing and Security discipline as well as career skills acquired throughout their degree. As such, this unit is not considered as part of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) requests. Students, under the supervision of a nominated placement and workplace supervisor, will take responsibility for their own learning and professional outcomes through regular feedback with the workplace and placement supervisor and through independent study, practice and research. The underpinning learning process is that of independent learning in which aspects of the work experience are reflected upon with a view to altering future behaviour, including academic and professional capabilities.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
