Description

This unit examines people and communities who are at risk of abuse, neglect and rights violations. It presents the concepts of vulnerability and participation, in a human rights context, and how these are applied in society, along with examining policies and practices that violate these concepts. Programs designed to minimise harm for people across the lifespan are examined along with skills and knowledge for workers implementing these programs. International issues on abuse, neglect and rights violations are explored.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the concepts of vulnerability, participation and rights and how these apply to vulnerable people and communities.
  2. Discuss human rights conventions and how these are interpreted and applied in society.
  3. Discuss legal issues in regards to gender based violence, rights, abuse and neglect for people across their lifespan.
  4. Analyse government policies, strategies, directions and reporting systems in areas of abuse and neglect across the lifespan.
  5. Explain the impact of current and cultural issues relating to gender based violence, domestic violence, abuse, neglect and rights abuse.
  6. Investigate programs that focus on prevention and reducing the impact of abuse and rights violations.

Unit Content

  1. Concepts of vulnerability, participation and rights theory, interpretation and application.
  2. The conventions focussing on rights of children, young people, the aged and families.
  3. Legal issues in gender based violence, abuse, neglect and sexual assault.
  4. Government policies, directions and reporting systems in the Western Australian and national context.
  5. Definitions, indicators, consequences and impact of different forms of abuse and neglect within a cultural context.
  6. Contemporary programs for children, families and communities at risk.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
