Description

This unit will provide students with the theoretical perspectives and practical skills required to work effectively in the field of community development locally and internationally. Students will be introduced to the values, practice, theory and approaches to developing both functional and place-based communities. The unit will enable students to understand the process of community development and strategies for engaging diverse populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Students will also learn about the fundamental issues connected with professional human services interventions at the community level.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically discuss and apply different theoretical approaches and discourses of power relating to community development, social capital, and the tenets of globalisation in local and international contexts.
  2. Analyse and discuss the issues of multi-culturalism in Australia and its relationship to engaging with diverse cultures.
  3. Apply the roles and skills necessary to undertake community development work, including cultural competence in the context of 'working' with Indigenous Australian and multicultural issues.
  4. Analyse the differences between a place management approach and a typical community development approach.

  1. Theories and nature of community development including discourses of power, social capital, and the tenets of globalisation.
  2. Process and approaches to community development including place management.
  3. Roles and skills for effective community development practice.
  4. Community development in Australian indigenous communities.
  5. Community development around the world.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
