Description

Students will select a topic for study in consultation with the unit coordinator, and write two papers on the selected field using appropriate research/study techniques.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Dependent on topic choice, possibly seminars or lectures and tutorials.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Employ appropriate research techniques to the study of a designated topic.
  2. Use and critically evaluate a range of primary and secondary source material in their chosen field.
  3. Use appropriate formats and style for the presentation of studies in a designated topic.

Unit Content

  1. Planning, preparation, and drafting of research papers: formats, graphics, data presentation, use of quotation and external reference, editing and proofing, bibliography and referencing.
  2. Research skills as appropriate for topic to include: Exploration of a significant topic of inquiry within a chosen field of study. Data collection, use of survey, respondents, questionnaire design. Systems of analysis and description, transcription.
  3. Use of primary and secondary sources to include; Survey techniques, evaluation and presentation of material and library use (book and serial sources).

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
