Description

This unit is specifically designed to teach social science students the frameworks relevant to their research/creative/work-based projects. Students will learn to define, plan and present their individual projects using relevant methodologies for the social sciences. Methodologies covered in the unit will vary depending on the needs of each student cohort. As part of planning their project, students will be expected to access and critique relevant primary and secondary sources.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Dependent on topic choice, possibly seminars or lectures and tutorials.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and interpret data in the light of their chosen topic.
  2. Enrich their ideas through the exchange of different approaches to, and perspectives on, the social sciences.
  3. Formulate the principal arguement underlying their project.
  4. Identify relevant frameworks for specific research / creative / work-based projects.
  5. Select methodologies appropriate to their projects.
  6. Use and critically evaluate a range of primary and secondary source material in their chosen field.
  7. Use appropriate formats and style for the presentation of studies in a designated topic.

Unit Content

  1. Analysis and interpretation of data.
  2. Frameworks relevant to students' research / creative / work-based projects.
  3. Methodologies relevant to student projects.
  4. Presentation of a case / argument.
  5. Presentation of a project plan.
  6. Selection and critique of primary and secondary sources.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
