This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create and present choreography in a variety of dance styles for informal presentations. This involves applying elements of shape, space, time and dynamics to movement and dance. The unit applies to those who are performing the choreography themselves for a dance class or teaching others how to perform the choreography for a non-professional performance. Work is usually undertaken under some supervision, though autonomy and judgement can be expected given the nature of the creative process. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: create and present choreography for at least two short dance pieces, according to creative and technical requirements. In the course of the above, the candidate must: use practical structural components of movement, phrases and sequences when choreographing dance pieces construct sequences of movement and form them into a cohesive whole generate structural components of shape, dynamics and rhythm in movement phrases and sequences demonstrate knowledge of dance culture and terminology in choreographic process document, reflect on and analyse choreography.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: dance terminology required for work described in performance evidence structural movement elements that comprise a choreographic work role of movement motifs in composition composition elements of choreographic dance sequences artistic, creative and technical procedures used by well-known dance choreographers methods for documenting dance safe dance practices verbal, physical and tactile methods for communicating dance ideas techniques for using dance as a form of communication principles of composition devices and their application in structuring dance, including: o accumulation o canon o inversion o retrograde o rondo strategies to respond to self-evaluation and feedback to improve choreography skills issues and challenges that arise when composing dance and ways to address them.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: dance studio or space with suitable flooring interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
