Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply complex ballet techniques when performing classical ballet repertoire as members of the corps de ballet in dance companies. The unit applies to those who are adept in blending pantomime with technique and moving in unison to provide background support to soloists and lead dancers. While some supervision and guidance are provided, dancers are expected to be self-directed and display a high level of motivation, ballet technique and responsibility for themselves and others. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: perform at least three ballet pieces demonstrating complex combinations of classical ballet technique and repertoire, as a member of the corps de ballet. In the course of the above, the candidate must: perform in unison as a member of the corps demonstrate complex classical ballet technique, including: o posture, weight placement and alignment in fully rotated turn-out position o complex movement sequences on both sides of the body o high level of coordination of limbs, torso and head o spatial awareness in group movements o confident creation of movement sequences o alignment and extensions in highly difficult combinations o pointe work in footwork express individual artistic quality and interpretation through the application of acting techniques and pantomime prepare mentally and physically for professional performances use ballet terminology correctly respond to different time signatures demonstrate professional work ethic.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: principles relating to physical movements and ballet technique, including: o extending o folding o relationship with gravity o rotating o shifting weight o spatial awareness o successional movement o use of breath o balance principles of safe dance practice and injury prevention, including those relating to: o spine articulation o foot engagement o bases of support, including feet, legs, hands, arms and torso o joint range of motion o differentiation of legs and pelvis o posture and alignment health and safety policies and procedures relevant to the dance environment performance psychology techniques ballet terminology required to demonstrate the performance evidence musical elements of time signatures, beat, tempo and syncopation, and their application to ballet dance technique strategies to evaluate and respond to feedback to improve ballet techniques.

Assessment

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: fully equipped dance studios with required flooring for performing ballet interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence opportunities for ballet performances selection of music or accompanists. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
