Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to refine and consolidate technical skills and knowledge in the art of partnering to perform pas de deux repertoire across classical and contemporary styles of ballet. The unit applies to those who are moving towards professional careers in contexts where complex ballet technique and versatility are required for performing as members of a professional dance company. They may be part of an ensemble or a soloist dancer who has the ability to work with different partners to perform pas de deux. While some supervision and guidance are provided, dancers are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and their partner during practice sessions, rehearsals and live performances. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: perform pas de deux repertoire at a professional level in at least three different performances, at least one of which must be in a classical ballet style, and at least one of which must be in a contemporary ballet style. In the course of the above, the candidate must: demonstrate the following advanced partnering skills at a professional level: o travelling steps o supported adagio o pirouettes o lifts synchronise movement in a duo situation demonstrate pointe work in footwork work effectively and with confidence with a partner apply professional practice emulate style and intention of pas de deux repertoire through partnering techniques employ physical control throughout performances demonstrate timing and weight centring techniques with partner, applying them to lifts and counterbalances demonstrate high level of spatial awareness in partnering, including floor patterns and aerial pathways show professional level of consistency from one performance to the next use ballet and stage terminology.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: principles relating to physical movements and ballet technique, including: o extending o folding o relationship with gravity o rotating o shifting weight o spatial awareness o successional movement o use of breath o balance principles of safe dance practice and injury prevention, including those relating to: o spine articulation o foot engagement o bases of support, including feet, legs, hands, arms and torso o joint range of motion o differentiation of legs and pelvis o posture and alignment strategies to develop professional practice ballet terminology required to demonstrate the performance evidence fundamental technical principles in classical and contemporary ballet as they relate to pas de deux pas de deux repertoire and performances.

Assessment

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: fully equipped dance studios with suitable flooring opportunities for pas de deux repertoire performances suitable music or accompanists. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. Plagiarism

Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
