This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform complex dance technique demonstrating range, depth, precision and artistry in traditional ballet and contemporary works at a professional level for rehearsals and productions of established or original works. The unit applies to those who are moving towards professional careers in contexts where complex dance technique and versatility are required. Dancers may be employed by professional companies where they perform advanced repertoire from traditional ballets and contemporary works as part of ensemble, duo or soloist roles. While some supervision and guidance are provided in practice sessions and rehearsals, dancers are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others during practice sessions, rehearsals and live performances. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: perform at least three different professional level performances in chosen style of dance. In the course of the above, the candidate must: display high level of competency in dance repertoire demonstrate a high level of spatial awareness in group movements exhibit high level of coordination of limbs, torso and head communicate mood and style of dance repertoire to audiences show professional level of consistency from one performance to the next participate as an integral part of a rehearsal process display a professional work ethic transfer classroom skills to performance contexts develop professional practice use dance and staging terminology.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: principles relating to performing dance repertoire, including: o extending o folding o relationship with gravity o rotating o shifting weight o spatial awareness o successional movement o use of breath o balance principles of safe dance practice and injury prevention, including those relating to: o spine articulation o foot engagement o bases of support, including feet, legs, hands, arms and torso o joint range of motion o differentiation of legs and pelvis o posture and alignment strategies to evaluate and receive feedback to improve performance techniques musical elements of time signatures, beat, tempo and syncopation and their application to dance technique dance and staging terminology required to demonstrate the performance evidence philosophical nature and history of chosen dance styles and allied disciplines.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: fully equipped dance studios with suitable flooring opportunities for performances suitable music or accompanists. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
