This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake research and experiment with techniques and media to achieve innovative effects for sets, props or scenic art for productions. It involves identifying needs for new techniques and media, researching different ideas and experimenting with techniques and media to create innovative production elements. The unit applies to those who display a high level of initiative and judgement as they take responsibility for facilitating an innovative approach to realising production designs in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: Create innovative production elements in selected area of expertise for at least one production. In the course of the above, the candidate must: research and experiment with different techniques and media to identify a new technique and media in selected area of expertise work collaboratively with required personnel on establishing and refining ideas.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: how the look and feel of production elements contribute to realising the creative vision for productions issues and challenges that typically arise when experimenting with techniques and materials in selected area of expertise, and strategies to address them innovative and experimental techniques for creating production elements in selected area of expertise how lighting affects materials used to create production elements and how to adapt techniques to take account of effects of lighting ways of adapting construction methods for different production styles, genres and art forms techniques for testing finished and unfinished materials how copyright, moral rights and intellectual property issues affect the process of creating production elements work health and safety and environmental regulations that affect the process of creating production elements.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: production elements a work space that allows for experimentation with techniques and materials. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
