Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to extend music composition skills in any music genre and refine skills through the setting of professional development goals. The unit applies to those who apply commitment and high-level skills in aural imagination, melodic development, instrumentation and orchestration to extend the range of compositional briefs to which they can competently respond. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: compose at least three musical pieces that demonstrate advanced skills in compositional techniques, in response to different compositional briefs. In the course of the above, the candidate must: plan and monitor progress in own professional skill development network with others in the industry to develop relationships evaluate own compositions and seek and use feedback from others to extend compositional skills.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: factors and techniques that contribute to excellence in music composition music and compositional elements and other criteria that is used to measure skill development different compositional techniques and how they can be applied to different musical styles and genres copyright notice requirements and processes when composing musical pieces methods for using different technologies and software when composing and presenting musical pieces accepted communication practices and protocols for building networks and collaborating with others communication skills to gather feedback to inform evaluation practices and extend compositional skills development goals relating to extending techniques for composing music documentation and monitoring requirements for professional development goals issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of extending techniques for composing music and strategies for overcoming them.

Assessment

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: instruments and equipment required for selected musical styles industry-standard software, hardware and audio equipment used for composing and presenting musical pieces interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Academic Integrity

Integrity is a core value at Edith Cowan University, and it is expected that ECU students complete their assessment tasks honestly and with acknowledgement of other people's work as well as any generative artificial intelligence tools that may have been used. This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
