Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to refine aural perception skills. This includes setting personal skill development goals and expanding methods and techniques which can be applied to recognising and transcribing music structures. The unit applies to those who are musicians, songwriters, composers, arrangers, conductors, musical directors and others who are required to use aural perception and memory skills. These individuals use well developed aural perception skills and knowledge of music structures and components in a range of contexts, including transcribing live or recorded music and preparing charts and other forms of notated music. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: transcribe at least three different music structures using aural perception and memory skills. In the course of the above, the candidate must: plan, monitor and evaluate progress in refining own aural perception skills hear and recognise complex music structures discuss and apply aural perception skills related to own music practice.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: different musical elements, including: o rhythm, including syncopation o harmony o pitch musical protocols, customs and terminology for listening to music related to chosen music specialisation techniques to improve aural memory and skills for aural identification conventions for music writing connected with aural transcription requirements of a skill development plan strategies to evaluate and improve skill development and respond to feedback issues and challenges that arise in the context of improving aural perception skills and strategies for addressing them.

Assessment

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: a selection of recorded or performed music opportunities to demonstrate aural perception skills in music realisation and transcription interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
