This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop control of the range of scope of own voice, techniques to enhance vocal quality and health, as well as strategies for developing the technical skills required to perform a range of repertoire with confidence. It applies to individuals who perform as vocalists and are developing competence to perform in public. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Evidence of the ability to: - investigate and choose a suitable repertoire - do vocal warm-ups and warm-downs - perform a selected set of exercises and/or studies according to safe and healthy work practices perform at least three pieces by memory demonstrating: - following agreed tempi - adjusting intonation - use of musical techniques to enhance performance - develop plans for own skill development. Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must: - describe physiology and anatomy of the human voice relevant to voice range and scope, and vocal techniques - describe physical problems that may affect voice, and explain how to care for voice - describe relevant repertoire to the selected area of specialisation - describe exercises for developing vocal technique - outline health and safety principles as they apply to vocal performance.
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to: - relevant accompaniment, instruments and/or equipment - suitable acoustic space - opportunities to demonstrate improvement in vocal techniques. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
