This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to refine instrumental techniques and expand the range of practical performance repertoire. The unit applies to those who are musicians and who apply high levels of technical and expressive skills to performance preparation, craft skills and musicianship. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: perform proficiently at least two repertoires on selected instrument, at least one of which is a solo repertoire and at least one of which is an ensemble repertoire. In the course of the above, the candidate must: demonstrate fluency, individual style and musical expression when performing repertoires demonstrate use of correct posture and required finger, hand and body positions in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles perform a specific set of technical exercises or studies.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: methods to care for, move, use and store chosen instrument acoustic principles required for chosen instrument tuning conventions for chosen instrument advanced instrumental elements and techniques, including: o intonation o rhythm o tempo o musical expression o phrasing o tone colour o musical styles techniques for applying control in relation to chosen instrument strategies and exercises for developing technical techniques extended repertoire that can be used for chosen instrument qualities of musical performance that would reflect refinement of technical playing skills WHS principles for correct posture and required finger, hand and body positions strategies to evaluate and improve own performance and respond to feedback.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: instrument and equipment required to demonstrate the performance evidence acoustic space required for performing musical pieces. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Breaches of academic integrity can include:
Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
