This unit describes the skills and knowledge required by performers to apply theatrical make-up and hairstyles for performances according to make-up and hair plans. The unit applies to those who are singers, actors, dancers, circus performers and comedians performing in commercial, competition or community settings. Individuals would usually work without supervision and are expected to apply initiative and judgement in the planning and selection of tools and techniques. They may also be assisting other performers. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: apply theatrical make-up and create required hairstyles for at least two performances. In the course of the above, the candidate must: clarify theatrical make-up and hair requirements for performances create effective characterisation using make-up and hairstyling create hairstyles and make-up looks in line with plans maintain continuity by recreating designs on consecutive occasions implement skin and hair care management strategies work collaboratively use different tools and styling aids to realise hair and make-up designs.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: work health and safety (WHS) requirements when applying theatrical make-up for performances organisational procedures for cleaning, sanitising and storing theatrical make-up and hairstyles cleaning and sanitising agents for tools and equipment used in the application of theatrical make-up and hairstyles key aspects performers need to be aware of in relation to: o lighting design o props o set design o stage and theatre size features of common character roles in relation to theatrical make-up and hairstyles roles and responsibilities of personnel in productions and performances principles of skin and hair care principles of continuity over a performance run key theatrical make-up and hairstyling techniques used to produce visual representation of characters.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: an environment in which different make-up and hairstyle designs can be applied, modified and maintained within commercially realistic timeframes interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence products and equipment relevant to applying theatrical make-up and hairstyles. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
