This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and explore a range of painting materials and processes to develop an individual professional style. It involves researching different painting materials and processes, exploring them in more detail and integrating them into one’s own work. It applies to skilled visual artists who integrate the use of those different materials and processes explored, to realise a body of creative work. They work with a high level of independence seeking mentoring and guidance as required. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: create a body of painting work using at least two different materials and processes. In the course of the above, the candidate must: research the properties, capabilities and use of an extensive range of painting materials to inform own work practice create painting work which demonstrates: o new or refined ways of working with materials through a process of experimentation o technical proficiency in the use of selected materials and processes o integration of materials and processes into own style o use of safe and sustainable work practices.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: reliable information sources about painting materials physical properties, characteristics, capabilities and storage requirements of a wide range of materials used to produce paintings how different materials and painting techniques combine to achieve different technical effects ways to use, adapt, combine and challenge the capabilities of an extensive range of painting materials to develop an individual professional style key safety and sustainability requirements for painting work.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: equipment, tools and materials used to produce paintings information sources. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
