This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop the conceptual aspects of any creative practice, including through the processes of evaluation, critical thinking and research. It involves evaluating own practices, developing ideas for creative work and integrating these in a professional context.. The unit applies to those who work in any creative form. At this level, practitioners engage with ideas as a fundamental part of the day-to-day process of creating work. Ideas and thinking are integral to the practical exploration of materials, processes and techniques, but hold a special place in the creative process. No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: produce at least one experimental and finished work that demonstrates the evolution of ideas through research, collaboration, experimentation and practice. In the course of the above, the candidate must: develop ideas in professional work through a demonstrated process of evaluation, research and practice resolve conceptual and technical issues as work progresses evaluate own work in terms of its coherence and place in a professional practice, and discuss with others at a professional level.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: external and personal influences on creative works contextual research and how it informs the creative process role of critical thinking in the creative process strategies to evaluate own work and seek feedback from others to improve professional practice.
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to: applicable resources for the production of work, including work space, tools, equipment and materials studio and workshop facilities interactions with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Integrity is a core value at Edith Cowan University, and it is expected that ECU students complete their assessment tasks honestly and with acknowledgement of other people's work as well as any generative artificial intelligence tools that may have been used. This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.
Breaches of academic integrity can include:
Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
