This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and analyse a range of information to produce critiques of cultural works. It applies to individuals who produce verbal or written critiques of cultural works in a range of contexts. Typical contexts are critiques of own work or the work or other artists, commentary on particular works, or reviews for magazines or academic publications. Work is self-directed, but there would be an expectation of discussion with professionals and experts in areas associated with the cultural works. No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Evidence of the ability to: - clarify research methods and information sources required for critique of specific cultural works - use extensive research and analysis to develop informed positions for critical evaluation of cultural works - use discussion with others to inform critique ideas and methodology - produce written or spoken critiques for specific audiences according to plans, cultural standards and conventions, and seek audience feedback. Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must: - outline sources of information about history, theory and cultural practices relating to cultural works - describe some typical requirements and constraints that may influence planning and completion of critiques - explain formal and informal research techniques - explain the cultural standards and conventions associated with producing critiques of cultural works - outline how information can be organised so that it can be easily accessed and applied to own arts practice - describe communication and presentation techniques for critiques - list and describe a range of opportunities that could be used to update and extend knowledge.
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to: - materials, resources and equipment needed to research information and present critiques of cultural works - opportunities for consultation and presentation of critiques. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
