This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop an overall sound design from production briefs. It applies to individuals with a good understanding of the physical nature of sound, along with research and creative thinking skills. They collaborate with other creative personnel to develop the overall sound or musical identity of a wide range productions. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Supersedes and is equivalent to CUSSOU501A - Develop sound designs
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Evidence of the ability to: - in collaboration with others, develop at least three designs that combine a mix of sound components in response to sound design briefs - experiment, assess and select from the creative ideas of self and others - document final evaluation of sound designs. Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must: - describe the production requirements that may impact on sound designs - describe the information that is typically found in sound design briefs - explain the formats that could be used to present design concepts - describe techniques for developing ideas and enhancing innovation - describe techniques for evaluating sound designs - explain the issues and challenges that typically arise when developing sound designs, and how to address them.
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to: - sound recording, production and playback equipment - sound design briefs for productions - interaction with others. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
