Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement a design for any productions requiring sound. It applies to individuals with a thorough understanding of a wide range of sound equipment and sound effects, along with the ability to supervise and work creatively and collaboratively with others, including sound mixers, sound editors and other studio technicians. The ability to solve problems that arise in the context of implementing sound designs is essential. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to: - implement sound designs that creatively and technically meet sound design specifications - work creatively and collaboratively with others on implementing sound designs - use a range of industry current sound recording, production and playback equipment in line with production requirements and industry standards.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must: - describe the production requirements that may impact decisions about sound designs - explain the copyright requirements that relate to sound design - explain the operational principles for available sound recording, production and playback equipment - explain the importance of each of the following to sound recording: - characteristics of sound in different recording and performance environments - availability of recording equipment and recording media - styles of musical interpretation - explain the basic principles of acoustics in relation to sound recording - describe the main techniques for evaluating the implementation of a sound design specification - explain the issues and challenges that typically arise when implementing sound designs, and how to address them.

Assessment

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to: - sound recording, production and playback equipment - productions where sound designs are implemented - production documentation. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
