Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop techniques for integrating singing skills with the acting and dancing skills required for musical theatre performers. At this level, practise plans focus on techniques required for building both vocal and physical stamina required for sustaining a musical theatre role. The unit applies to those who are performers aiming to integrate the vocal and movement skills required for musical theatre into their singing repertoire. The process includes supervision during practice sessions with an expectation that individuals also work independently to develop the required techniques. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to: apply singing skills to convey meaning and emotion in solo, partnered and group work on at least three different occasions. In the course of the above, the candidate must: develop singing skills required for performing in musical theatre perform vocal warm-ups and cool-downs sing from a simple song lead sheet work collaboratively demonstrate memorisation skills for retaining lyrics and lines of dialogue improve own singing techniques in response to constructive feedback.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of: techniques for speaking and singing using different accents features of different musical theatre styles character development techniques elements of simple music notation and how they relate to interpreting songs principles underlying vocal techniques in a musical theatre performance context impact of different vocal techniques on audiences.

Assessment

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. This includes access to venues and spaces with acoustics and equipment required for musical theatre rehearsal. Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
