Description

This unit is designed for students who elect to specialise in classical ballet in their final year of study. Students work towards developing their classical ballet technique to professional level in barre, centre practice and pointe work (or for men, a special program in strength, stamina and men's technique). The unit also focuses on the development of individual artistry, musicality and reflective practice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform with a high level of technical accuracy achieved through good alignment, flexibility, co-ordination, balance and spatial awareness.
  2. Dance with a level of artistry, musicality and strength that is expected in professional performance. Adapt to a range of technical variations and teaching methods expected by the profession.
  3. Adapt to a range of teaching methods, class exercises and respond effectively to feedback.
  4. Execute each section of class work - barre, centre practice and allegro at a professional level.
  5. Reinforce learning and support of continued development through reflective practice.

Unit Content

  1. Feedback, professional conduct and constructive criticism.
  2. Analysis, self-correction and reflective thinking.
  3. Graded input in terms of increasing precision, complexity, and control and degree of difficulty.
  4. Studio based practice in specific areas of specialization in addition to daily technique classes pointe and men's coaching.
  5. Techniques designed to produce peak performance both physical and psychological.
  6. Advanced technique classes in the studio or on stage.
