Description

This unit investigates the socio-cultural context around issues of diversity, access and equity, through a consideration of marginalised practices and cultural inequities surrounding world dance cultures. The connections between cultural dance and music will be explored as a practical component, integrating the theoretical with studio-based explorations. A range of cultural dance styles will be explored, connecting movement to its historical, social and cultural roots.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed DAN1430

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Debate the issues around diversity, equity and access as they exist within current arts practices.
  2. Research and critically analyse dance works showing an appreciation of socio-cultural impacts, including different cultural perceptions of and engagement with dance.
  3. Perform sequences that embody the particular style and musicality of the discipline, including complex rhythmic and spatial precision.
  4. Use appropriate terminology in relation to the history and cultural content basic to the movement discipline and the accompanying music.

Unit Content

  1. Issues of access, equity and diversity in relation to dance practice across history and culture.
  2. Culturally specific dances and how they impact on, or are integrated into cultural or religious belief systems.
  3. Practical studio exploration of one such movement form, learning the particularities of the dance alongside the significance of the culture and music.
  4. Execution of exercises and sequences demonstrating the embodiment and awareness of the particular dynamics of the discipline.

Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
