Description

This unit prepares students for the academic rigours of postgraduate study. Students will deepen their engagement with the two subject areas already introduced in third year, choosing either performance theory or dramaturgy as the conceptual basis for their self-directed study. By examining various research methods, students will also formulate and present a proposal for a small research project.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed DAN3405, DAN3455 and either DAN3415 or DAN2425

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Devise and propose a research project idea delineating a suitably rigorous topic of inquiry.
  2. Critically examine and select academic resources in relation to a chosen research area.
  3. Write a succinct literature review.
  4. Plan an appropriate research approach.
  5. Communicate complex ideas clearly and convincingly using appropriate academic language and conventions.

  1. Performance theory and dramaturgy.
  2. Writing a literature review.
  3. Introduction to research methods and methodologies.
  4. Writing and presenting a research proposal.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Independent study with supervision. Lecturers will provide supervisory guidance to assist students to explore and refine research project ideas. Students will develop an understanding of how to select and use an appropriate research approach as well as how to select and analyse appropriate sources.

This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
