Description

This unit models professional practice in the classical dance sector whereby a dancer becomes personally responsible to maintain their fitness, as well as plan and direct their future pathways. Students will be supported to research, organise and undertake an extended activity that simulates a workplace experience in the professional dance sector. This may be an audition, a placement in a dance company, an independent or solo project or workplace experience within a dance-related organisation. Students will participate in classes to maintain fitness but must propose their own learning program. Self-reflection and practical workplace experience will prepare students for the realities of transitioning into the professional environment.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students may need to attend night time performance calls.

Must have passed DAN3485

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop and practise a personal program to maintain fitness for ballet and contemporary techniques at a professional level.
  2. Apply research and communication skills to find and organise a professional placement or workplace opportunity within the dance industry.
  3. Apply discipline knowledge in a professional setting.
  4. Use reflective practice to explore, assess and improve the ongoing development of personal professional practice.

Unit Content

  1. Refining and maintaining the technical and artistic skills required for a professional classical ballet or contemporary dancer.
  2. Researching national and international dance opportunities and apply for placement or workplace experience.
  3. Self-reflection and journal writing.
  4. Planning, researching and organising the selection of workplace or activity, and the choice of repertoire if auditioning.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will undertake practical classes, as well as research and apply for a professional placement or workplace opportunity. They will subsequently reflect on their industry experience.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
