Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop fundamental acting skills for theatre and techniques necessary to successfully transact with other actors and audience. At this level, performers such as actors are expected to use initiative and sound judgment and to apply theoretical concepts and skills when responding to the unpredictable from a range of scripts. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The learner must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit. There must be demonstrated evidence that the learner has the ability to: - follow direction for character development - clarify creative and artistic goals for characterisation and performance - explore and experiment with fundamental acting techniques - research aspects of scripts to improve understanding of artistic requirements - integrate knowledge, technique and creativity in rehearsal and performance on at least two occasions - use effective communication skills to provide feedback

Knowledge Evidence

This learner must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively do the task outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of: - explain the different improvisation techniques to demonstrate creativity and imagination for characterisation - describe protocols and conventions appropriate to the context of workshop and performance - describe the application of the given circumstances to characterization - describe roles and responsibilities of ensemble and other relevant personnel involved in rehearsals and performance - outline work health and safety principles as they apply to rehearsal, and performance

Assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit: - direct observation of the candidate in rehearsal and performance - direct questioning combined with rehearsal - third-party workplace reports of on-the-job performance (this can include reports from guest/visiting artists/directors) - scenarios as a basis for discussion of issues and challenges that arise in the context of text analysis, character development, rehearsal and performance Both practical skills and knowledge must be assessed. Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in a performance environment. Assessment must ensure access to: - a range of relevant and current industry repertoire - studio where rehearsal can be applied and discussed - appropriate persons for rehearsal - acoustic space for rehearsal and performance Assessor Requirements Assessors must have: - a minimum of 5 years industry experience - an extensive knowledge of industry practices (both theoretical and practical) with application to the performing arts industry standards
