Description

This unit examines the ways that humans have designed and organised their environment through history. Students also examine the general design principles that underlievarious historic periods and cultures and how they are applied across a range of activities including architecture, tools, entertainment, clothing, domestic arts and commercial activity.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss and describe the general design principles that underlie various historic periods and cultures.
  2. Present the results of research in a clear and succinct manner.
  3. Understand and discuss the impact of major designers on their society.
  4. Understand how design has been applied across a range of activities including architecture, interior design and graphic design.
  5. Work effectively as a member of creative research teams.

Unit Content

  1. Academic protocols of research and writing.
  2. Chronological design history covering Architecture.
  3. Chronological design history covering Interior Design and Graphic Design.
  4. Chronological history of global designed artifacts.
  5. Design research.
  6. Group research work.
  7. Presentation technique and media.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
