Description

Students carry out group design tasks, each of which requires them to develop their interpersonal and design management skills. They develop their understanding of soft skills including facilitation and negotiation. They learn about asking effective questions and giving feedback in the context of sustainable design. Students learn to select and apply design methods suitable for specific tasks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Adopt a sustainable approach to design.
  2. Ask effective questions.
  3. Develop an understanding of design management.
  4. Develop an understanding of sustainable design methods.
  5. Use small groups to develop design proposals.
  6. Work collaboratively with others on design projects.
  7. Write executive summaries and short reports on group work.

Unit Content

  1. Gaining feedback on designs using group process skills.
  2. Team based design using structured design methods.
  3. Running design team meetings, setting meeting agendas, roles and responsibilities of participants.
  4. Understanding management structures in a design context.
  5. Negotiating design outcomes in an industry situation.
